The
meeting was called to order at 11:30 a.m. at Nate’s
Restaurant in Port Clinton.
Andrew
(Findlay) said that it is his understanding that MCI has made some sort of
monetary agreement with several states, including Ohio, and there is a
possibility that municipalities may receive a portion of that revenue.
Andrew
also said that a taxpayer in Findlay has hired an accountant and attorney to
challenge Findlay’s position on the taxation of S Corporations.
The
OML committee has raised the question of whether or not the Thursday night
banquet should be terminated beginning this year. The consensus of our group is that rather
than terminating the banquet, the entertainment portion should be given
up. The group also agreed to contribute
$250 toward the cost of a speaker at this year’s conference. The motion was made by Cheri (Bowling Green)
and seconded by Andrew (Findlay).
Joe
Zapatosky from Ohio Business Gateway will be at our
January meeting to present information on OBG business return filing, scheduled
to begin in 2006. Our re-certification
forms are due at the end of January. If
anyone has questions about the form, they should bring them to the January
meeting.
Regarding
filing of business returns, we will get something electronically, but the
federal forms will be sent to us by the taxpayer.
The
group had expressed an interest in the past for someone to speak to us on the
changes in bankruptcy law. Jean
(Perrysburg) will check to see if Mike Burke is available. Andrew may also know of someone out of Akron
who is very good.
State
legislator Mark Wagner is interested in meeting with our group. The committee has determined that it is
important for us to establish which issues are most important to us and to have
a solid position on each of those issues before taking it to the state
level. At our last meeting, we established
several topics, some of which still need volunteers to research them. Topics and researchers are:
information sharing – still need a volunteer
consolidated returns – Peter (Toledo)
state utility payments – Jean (Perrysburg)
funding for technological improvements – still need
a volunteer
S Corporations – Doug (RITA)
CAT tax – Mike (Maumee)
General uniformity on withholding – Pat (Oregon)
2106 deductions – Jeff (Port Clinton)
common form – Angie (Sylvania)
gambling – still need a volunteer
If
anyone wishes to volunteer for the topics that are still open, contact Angie.
The
group is trying to decide whether separate forms should be drafted for
net-profit agencies versus individuals.
They will investigate how other areas are approaching this matter. It was agreed that a final draft of what we
would like to see as a common form should be finished before approaching other
tax groups.
The
Maumee Theater is available on October 6th, so that will be the date
for the seminar.
The
next meeting will be held on Wednesday, January 11th at 9:30 a.m. in
Perrysburg.
